Algaennovation's long-term development strategy in Iceland is to produce microalgae, which will be used primarily as feed for fish, but will also be used to produce products for human consumption.
The project is a progressive attempt to further use the energy produced at the Hellisheidi geothermal power plant. Algaennovation purchases hot and cold water, electricity and carbon dioxide for production. The start-up of the plant is a significant step towards the implementation of a circular economy in Iceland and towards sustainability, as the production process will result in a negative carbon footprint.
Our team is involved in this long-term project as a technology design and modelling partner and the first operational plant was commissioned in autumn 2019. After a successful start-up, planning will continue in 2020 with the aim of expanding production.
